Like every mug I make, this one started out as a lump of clay on my pottery wheel. All the shaping and glazing is done by hand by me in my studio in Sacramento, CA.
I’ve had a Ouija board since I was a kid. The same one, in fact, since I was about 13 years old.
Maybe that Ouija board was the start of it, but I’ve had a fascination with the occult for most of my life.
That fascination evolved as I traced the development of the tarot cards’ supernatural associations, looked deeper into the history of alchemy, and tried to better understand why we have such a strong aesthetic association with the word “gothic”.
After I saw the gothic wonder of the cathedral of Milan in person, I asked myself what it would look like if I combined the visual language of one of the windows with the design footprint of a Ouija board planchette -- combining two actors that already stood on the broad stage of the dark and otherworldly.
The mug you see is the first of hopefully many answers.
